it’s not just a phase, it’s a lifestyle

I don’t know about you, but I feel like this phrase has been used to describe anyone and everyone from vegans to emos to little girls dressing up as Disney princesses on a normal day. So I think when it comes to fitness, people are kind of hesitant to bring this phrase up, thinking it to be cliché. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t true—well, to some extent.

A lot of people pursue casual weightlifting which is great. They might go to the gym before work somedays, or maybe in the evening. But if your goal is to see serious growth in your muscles or your strength you will have to do more than just go the gym once in a while. It takes a certain commitment that truly requires self-motivation. If you go to the gym because that’s what your friends do, or because that is what the mainstream media say you should do, eventually you’ll probably realize that it isn’t the thing for you. Which is okay, everyone has different hobbies and passions. But self-motivation and a willingness to push yourself is necessary for bodybuilding and true muscle growth.

In my current stage of life I don’t follow strict bodybuilding, nor do I compete in bodybuilding shows, duh. This can become unhealthy as your bodyfat continues to lower, and can lead to some nasty side effects. That doesn’t mean I don’t follow a relatively strict regimen, however. This plan stretches from my diet to my workout routine to how much sleep I get and how I spend my time.

If your goal is to really commit to weightlifting—or any other form of working out, like calisthenics or CrossFit—than you need to fully commit to a lifestyle. But like I mentioned earlier … obsession isn’t the key. There’s a fine line between commitment and obsession. It’s not good if your happiness is dictated by what the scale said that morning. You shouldn’t have a bad day or beat yourself up when you forget to workout or cheat on your diet. I believe a healthy, committed relationship to weightlifting can lead to lifelong dreams and fulfilled goals.
