It’s taken me an embarassingly long time to learn this, but here it is: if I wait too long during the day to do what’s hard, it doesn’t get done. We all have tasks we enjoy more than others, right? Thank goodness. That’s what makes us teachers and caregivers and visionaries… joy is a strong motivator.
For me, exercising is hard. I always feel better after I move it, move it, but tend to forget that fact on a regular basis. I need to exercise, but find it difficult to be consistent. If I start my morning with other things, before I know it…even the thought of exercising is overwhelming.
I wish I had some statistics on this. Maybe I will start keeping track.
Because even though a brisk evening walk, bike ride, or basketball game of HORSE sounds sooooo good and the weather is cooler later in the day, if I wait, it doesn’t seem to happen. The day gets away from me and the hard thing gets put off until tomorrow.
When it comes to school, science has become the hard thing. I love it. My star student, not so much. We’ve put science off for so long, neither of us can find our way back.
So this week I will start my day with some sort of early exercise and make sure planning science is a top priority. I will do the hard thing first. And hopefully soon I’ll be ready to take on the next hard thing…
